Growing up in Amery, Wisconsin, Tanner attended Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. While at CSP, Tanner earned his Bachelor of Arts in sport and exercise psychology with a minor in psychology. He was also a member of the school newspaper for all four years, and sports editor for a year and a half. As sports editor, Tanner covered numerous events such as the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp, the US Bank Stadium Basketball Classic, as well as Super Bowl 52. Tanner plans to become a sport psychologist to help athletes achieve their peak performance and hopes to continue his writing career. Tanner is a diehard Minnesota sports fan, rooting on the Gophers, Twins, Timberwolves, and Vikings.
